Prismatic
Hey all.

tumblingtumblertime:

I mostly made this tumblr in order to follow others, but no one, (including myself) knows what it may end up being. That being said, I am relatively under the weather today, so I don’t find any particular need to strive to be interesting. Anyway, whoever may manage to see this in spite of it being my one and only post for however long it will be such, thanks for visiting! If you come back in some number of unknown days or months, there may or may not ever be anything to see here! (So jokes on you, people who like any form of knowing what to expect! I’m a total friggin’ wildcard!)

So, historically, I haven’t posted much, I chat with people on here from time to time, I send memes and art and other stuff I find to friends, and I doubt that will change much anytime soon. If for whatever reason anyone wants to chat with me, my dms are open, but I am often slow to respond. Sorry if you’re seeing this because of a like-spam, I often forget when I’m not on my dash.

idk how much this made the news in the Americas but the Hellenic coast guard watched as a vessel carrying more than 400 (some estimates say 700) migrants capsized and sank in the Mediterranean. 104 people survived. official death toll is 79 because the rest is missing, and might never be found. There are claims that many children were below deck.

Frontex and the Hellenic Coast Guard was aware of the vessel and the dangerous situation it was in for days, but did not intervene

image

The coast guard released this photo. They came this close but did not intervene. EU and the Greek coast guard sat and waited for this boat to sink

image

Survivors and rescuers claim that the boat capsized after being towed by the coast guard at high speed.

if this is true, at best they caused an accident out of carelessness and immediately retreated to cover it up, or they committed a massacre.

id: a series of tweets about a boat, with migrants on it, capsizing and leaving 104 survivors.

tweet one, from niki kitsantonis, reads: “Photos of migrant boat taken by Greek coast guard helicopter on Tuesday indicates hundreds were aboard. Official death toll so far 79 with 104 survivors. Shipping Ministry official says boat sunk in spot where sea is 4,000 meters deep, so retrieving other victims may be impossible.”

the photos attached are of a blue (?) boat with people packed like sardines in the middle of the water.

tweet two reads: “The vast search and rescue operation continues with hundreds missing and at least 78 dead, the Hellenic Coast guard said in a statement on Thursday. A new photo has been released by #Greece’s coast guard showing the fishing vessel that appears to be photographed at night time.”

the photo attached is of the boat at night time.

tweet three, from iasonas apostolopoulos, reads: “[thread emoji] New item that completely changes the data! Rescuers revealed that the new coast guard was towing them at high speed, this destabilized the boat and sank it! If this is true, we are not talking about criminal negligence, but about an act that caused the death of 600 people.”

the video attached is of a middle-aged man, with his arms folded, wearing an n95 mask, surrounded by people.

No actually, this needs to be in the body of the post.

This isn’t someone looking to make a quick buck off the backs of desperate trans women.

This is someone who is gathering a hit list. This person may use your info for active swatting, but not just that, this product will kill you.

This product is outright dangerous. This dose of ashwagandha is ASTRONOMICAL. It’s anxiolytic - meaning that it causes agitation and anxiety - and if you take this dose every day you’ll be developing serotonin syndrome within 4-6 weeks, and an ER trip/death within 8. And if you’re on medications that interact (SSRIs, antipsychotics, most kinds of opiates) or alcohol, this risk is magnified.

This person wants to KILL YOU.

I haven’t bought green onions in a year.

If you’re sitting here thinking “holy shit, Nina, those look like hell,” you’re not wrong—they’re recovering from some unintended abuse. They survived two weeks in triple digits (that’s upward of 35 degrees for y’all with the weird sciencey math units) while I, uh. Forgot to water them. The outer layers dried out to protect the inner layers and as soon as I watered these thirsty bitches they went

They literally looked dead three weeks ago. So yeah, they’re not too pretty right now, but you wouldn’t be either, and they’re bouncing back nicely.

So, how to do this simple thing?

1) obtain dirt and a pot. You’ll want to do this first because the next steps go surprisingly fast. My green onions live in a 6” terracotta pot and some gardening topsoil, but you can use potting mix (not Miracle Gro tho, that stuff is trash), dirt from outside if you live in a place where it’s safe to do so, any kind of soil will do provided it’s clean and doesn’t contain pests (although most pests will leave alliums alone because they hate the smell). To be clear, because we love and respect our biosphere in this house, “pests” in this context means “bugs that specifically will attack green onions while providing no benefit to either the onions or any other plants you may have.” The pot is mandatory, however—if you want to do this year-round, you need to be able to move the onions inside/outside as weather allows/demands.

2) buy some green onions. You can skip straight to step 4 from here if you want, but if you’re planning to use them first…

3) cut them only to the tops of the white bits. In other words you ONLY want to use the green part.

4) put the white bits in a ramekin, measuring cup, etc. with some water. I’ve used things as big as juice glasses for this, but that’s really on the big end. Put your container in a window with some sun.

5) 3-5 days later, you should see about half an inch of root growth on the bottoms of your onions, and possibly the beginnings of a tiny green spear at the top. (Maybe a bit more, if they’re overachievers.) Plant them in your pot with just a bit of the white sticking up overtop of the soil.

6) water just a little bit, every other day. You want the soil to always be moist to the touch, but never out and out wet.

7) watch them sprout. This is excellent for your mood, by the way. Science says having and tending green things provides visible benefits to both your physical and mental health. We also know that making tangible things is good for your mental health, and green onions grow quickly, so you get benefits fast.

8) As they grow, you can reduce watering to three times per week because they’ll be able to store more water. The leaves will feel firm and “thick” (you’ll understand what I mean when you get to feel a properly-watered green onion) when they have enough water, much like a succulent’s leaves will get thicker and firmer when it’s well-hydrated, so it’s relatively easy to tell if they need a drink.

9) trim your onions as you need them! I try to never take more than 3-4 leaves in a week—about half a bunch—so it has time to grow more, but if you live with a bunch of people you can get around this by just starting more green onions. Buy three or four bunches and plant them all. They don’t go bad because they literally just grow until you need them. I’ve actually planned meals around “I have not used enough green onions lately and the leaves are bending under their own weight, I need to trim some tops.” Although the ones you see in the grocery store have open tops, you’ll notice closed spears on your new leaves, and these are completely edible. Yes, I regret to tell you they cut off and probably waste the tapered bits just for The Aesthetic. They’re just like any other green part of the onion.

AND YOU WILL NEVER NEED TO BUY GREEN ONIONS AGAIN. Just add a little soil now and again to replenish the nutrients.

Yes, they’re cheap. Yes, this is a small thing. But many small things added together are a big thing. And when you’re confident in your green onions, if you have the desire and ability to do more, there are many other plants you can grow from grocery-store starters.

GO FORTH. ENJOY THIS KNOWLEDGE.

Blue/purple lips and fingernails is a symptom of low oxygen in lighter skin tones.

In darker skin tones you’re looking for grey or white lips and fingernails. Other places where this may be not evidence is the tongue and gums.

Figured since everyone gets taught what low oxygen looks like on lighter skin. Everyone should know what it looks like on dark skin too.

When I was about 20, a slightly younger Black woman had a bicycle accident in front of me. Although she clearly had a bad head injury, she could get up, and in her confusion in distress kept insisting that she wanted to keep cycling to class. I wrapped her in a blanket and tried to keep her sitting down, and was on the line with 911 while trying to keep her calm and in one place, and she kept getting more upset and distressed as she overheard me saying things like how much she was bleeding. So I was trying to do this chipper act on the phone to 911 to stop this injured woman from panicking too much, in a wild teeth-gritted HELP US PLEASE HAHAHA way.

The 911 woman asked me if she was blue, and I looked at this young woman and what came out was “well, in normal life she is a person of color!! and now her mouth is grey, which I don’t think it normally is! Ahahaha!” And the dispatcher was like, tell me more about this, is it blue? And I’m going, “technically no! But it is not a great color! Help us now!” while the student was crying saying WHY ARE YOU SAYING THIS ABOUT ME, and I was trying to explain that it did not look like the right color to me, while assuring the student that I wasn’t judging in the least but she actually looked quite unwell, etc.

To conclude the story, soon enough she went on the ambulance and they said it was very serious but all fixable, and some of the responders said I’d behaved correctly and done things Right, possibly because I was in a state of high tension myself at that point.

I later went and obsessively read about low oxygen in people of color, came up with a better script and endlessly tried to replay the conversation along a better script so that I’d be ready next time.

Unfortunately this formed a core memory. My mind frequently returns to it and the horrible assessment of this student turning more and more cold and grey, while a woman yammered in my ear about whether she was blue and how blue she was, and what I should have said instead, and what I should have done instead, and whether I could have optimised this 5 second exchange to get an ambulance faster. It’s the kind of thing where you’re dreaming, and you turn left and walk into it again, and even though you practiced the Good New Script you’re in a nightmare and can’t express it properly. Or you wake up at 3 am with someone’s mean comment ringing in your ears and you turn over AND THEN ANOTHER THING: you weren’t very fast or clever in that situation with that one 911 dispatcher, were you? It feels pretty bad to not be equipped to respond well, when someone is hurt.

I was just a bystander in a situation that resolved in half an hour, but not having this knowledge firmly in my pocket when I needed it has burned it into my head in an uncomfortable way. You, however, can read this post and remember it, if it’s helpful for you. and if it helps you, then you’ll do better than me, and the people around you will be safer. You can have it the comfortable way! I hope it rests comfortably in your head and does good there.

I just ended up having to read this out loud because I got to the end of the post and said “oh good Lord” under my breath.

Yeah, that one’s gonna stick.

In case anyone is wondering, you can say “yes, their lips are blue” when a person with dark skin has grey or white lips or fingernails. You don’t have to explain it further, the person’s lips would be blue if they had a paler skin tone.

I am an ER nurse and this is the best description of this event that I have ever heard.

 FEMALE HEART ATTACKS

I was aware that female heart attacks are different, but this is description is so incredibly visceral that I feel like I have an entire new understanding of what it feels like to be living the symptoms on the inside. Women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have… you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor the we see in movies. Here is the story of one woman’s experience with a heart attack:

"I had a heart attack at about 10:30 PM with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might have brought it on. I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking, ‘A-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up. A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you’ve been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you’ve swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn’t have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensation–the only trouble was that I hadn’t taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.

After it seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasms), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws. ‘AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening – we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI happening, haven’t we? I said aloud to myself and the cat, Dear God, I think I’m having a heart attack! I lowered the foot rest dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself, If this is a heart attack, I shouldn’t be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else… but, on the other hand, if I don’t, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in a moment.

I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed the Paramedics… I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn’t feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to un-bolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in. I unlocked the door and then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I don’t remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the radiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like ‘Have you taken any medications?’) but I couldn’t make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stints to hold open my right coronary artery.

I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents. Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I learned first hand.

1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body, not the usual men’s symptoms but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn’t know they were having one and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation and go to bed, hoping they’ll feel better in the morning when they wake up… which doesn’t happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that you’ve not felt before. It is better to have a ‘false alarm’ visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be!
2. Note that I said ‘Call the Paramedics.’ And if you can take an aspirin. Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER - you are a hazard to others on the road. Do NOT have your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at what’s happening with you instead of the road. Do NOT call your doctor – he doesn’t know where you live and if it’s at night you won’t reach him anyway, and if it’s daytime, his assistants (or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn’t carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later.
3. Don’t assume it couldn’t be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it’s unbelievably high and/or accompanied by high blood pressure). MIs are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive to tell the tale.“

Reblog, repost, Facebook, tweet, pin, email, morse code, fucking carrier pigeon this to save a life!

I wish I knew who the author was. I’m definitely not the OP, actually think it might be an old chain email or even letter from back in the day. The version I saw floating around Facebook ended with “my cardiologist says mail this to 10 friends, maybe you’ll save one!” And knew this was way too interesting not to pass on.

snopes.com says this one’s true.

Save a life–Reblog.

Female heart attacks are much different, and most people don’t know it!

This is so much more helpful than the fucking lists that basically describe everything that happens during a really nasty panic attack and then tell you to go seek help as if you don’t have an anxiety disorder that does this to you on a regular basis and can afford to go to the emergency room.

Auto-reblog.

Many women have silent heart attacks as well, where there are no symptoms at all until BAM! Then it happens.

As a formerly (mostly) healthy person who is now dealing with post-covid heart issues, this was tremendously helpful to read. Reblog, save a life.

Important for all genders so you can recognize other symptoms in yourself and others.

with twitter imploding, people are talking about how much it’ll suck to have celebrities and brands on here, but…I think celebrities can exist on tumblr in a healthy way.

because I’ve already seen it happen.

I don’t know if you guys remember, but there used to be a decent number of celebrities on here! I mean, the white house had an official tumblr! so did my local library for some reason! everyone thought tumblr was the place to be!

we had George Takei, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Hayley Williams, Ariana Grande, Dylan Marron, Dante Basco, Rebecca Sugar, John Green, Hannah Hart, Jacksfilms, Daniel Howell, and Ashens to name a few, as well as brand accounts for Doctor Who, Sherlock, Denny’s, and so many others.

(Cole Sprouse was even on here, and it was fine. don’t act like it wasn’t. it was really not a big deal! it was fine!)

there were plenty of celebrities and brands on tumblr a decade ago - and it worked fine when people knew to stay in their lane!

did Obama’s official account give a shit when people posted Obamney slash? absolutely not!

did we pay attention to whatever the brand accounts were posting? we did not!

and so we existed pretty well together on this site - because, after all, we don’t have to look at anything we don’t want to. we can block people. and they can block us. and we can keep posting what we want, no matter what any celebs or brands have to say about it, just like it’s always been.

the only thing I think needs to change is, well…hey…remember how I mentioned John Green and Rebecca Sugar up there?

yeah the reason we don’t see them on here anymore isn’t because tumblr isn’t a place they’d thrive - it’s because a bunch of assholes harassed them until they left.

and that’s not fucking okay.

so look, if you see celebs/brands on here, follow them, or don’t! block them and ignore them, or don’t!

but if you send threats and harassment to anyone on here, whether it be a celebrity, brand, or average tumblr user, you are the asshole. full stop. sending threats to other people is never okay. never.

and yes, this goes for the corporate accounts too! those are still run by people!

it’s somebody’s job to run those accounts, and guess what! that poor, probably-underpaid person doesn’t deserve to get sent gore and death threats because their job is running a corporate tumblr account!

just, whatever happens when twitter explodes and dies a horrible death, it’s gonna be okay. but please be kind. above everything else, please, I am fucking begging you, be kind.

it’s really the most important part of thriving here
